Advantages/Disadvantages
of Wind Power
advantages disadvantages for wind power - More Coming
Soon
The Pros :
1. Renewability: The renewability of
wind power is by far it's most appealing feature. No
matter what happens with our other un-renewable
resources, there's no denying that the wind will
continue to blow. Whether it's an off-shore wind farm,
or just a turbine set up in someone's backyard, the
power of the wind is here to stay, so why not take
advantage of what nature has to offer?

2. Environmentally Friendly: While
there are still some kinks to be worked out regarding
the effect of wind turbines on sonar-capable animals
like bats and owls, wind power is definitely an
ecologically sound source of energy. This is especially
true when comparing wind and solar energy to other
conventional sources like gas and coal. After the
initial production of the turbine, it emits little to no
carbon to own and operate a wind turbine. So with wind
power you are establishing yourself as a responsible
citizen.
3. It`s Free!: As with solar
power there is a large initial investment to be made if
you want to convert your home to wind power. However, if
you use your system wisely it will pay itself off within
a decade or so, and after that all energy harnessed is
free. You can`t say that about natural gas. So while the
rest of the gas-guzzling population suffers as heating
costs continue to rise, you can sit back and watch your
investment pay off. Also you can contact your local or
national government about subsidies for your renewable
investment. For more information on wind power
subsidies, check out our
wind resources section.
The Cons :
1. Intermittency: Depending on
your location, wind power is not always at full force,
so there will be times when the amount of energy
harnessed may not meet your energy demands at any given
moment. If you are still connected to your local grid,
this shouldn`t be a problem as you can usually set up an
energy sharing system with your local utility company
where you sell them energy when you produce more than
you use, and buy that energy back in times of need. If
you`re off the grid, you can invest into batteries to
store the energy for times of need. While the batteries
are a less efficient use of power, they are necessary in
some situations.
2. Initial Cost: Because wind
power is yet to be a common technology the costs of
setting up a wind farm or wind turbine for your home are
still fairly expensive in comparison to other
conventional energy sources. However when analyzing the
risk of investment, one can conclude that the initial
cost is worth the later years of free energy and also
the lack of carbon emitted from using renewables.
